Areas of Interest
Research experiences and interests of Dr. Rahman cover the challenging issues of modeling, processing, and computational  techniques of visual and multimedia signals such as image, video and audio in the area of intelligent transportation system, biometric security system, cognitive science, stereo vision, biomedical visualization, human computer interaction, geosciences (e.g., SAR), genetics (e.g., cDNA microarray), astronomy, surveillance and communication systems.

Overview

Dr. Rahman has a strong record of research in his area that includes contribution to 40 publications in refereed journals and proceedings of international conferences. Among his publications 16 papers appear in the reputed ISI-indexed journals in his area such as IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-I, and the journals of Elsevier (Pattern Recognition, Expert Systems with Applications, Signal Processing, Journal of Visual communication and Image Representation), IET, and Springer. His research articles have been published in proceedings or accepted to be presented in 24 peer reviewed international conferences held throughout the continents such as in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. He was and has been with more than 15 international conferences in different capacities such as coordinator, convener, and member of technical and organizing committees, session chair, reviewer, and presenter. He received several prestigious international awards including the 2009 Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award from NSERC of Canada, 2010 Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Award from Concordia University, 2015 Sydney R. Parker Best Paper Award from the journal Circuits Systems, and Signal Processing, Springer, and similar awards from conferences including the ISI-RSC 2014, Malaysia and CSNDSP 2002, UK during his academic career. A number of instances, he has been invited to deliver technical talks, seminars, tutorials, and lectures in internationally reputed scholastic gatherings in home and abroad. He has also been involved in various kinds of consultancy services in the public and private sectors of Bangladesh.

Research & Awards

Research Projects:

      • Development of mathematically tractable and computationally efficient deterministic or stochastic models for the audio-visual signals that describe essential features of a signal (e.g., motion in a video or discriminative features that represent affective states of human) by considering the higher-order structural variability or statistics of the data samples.
      • Application of these models in various real-world processing and computational techniques such as pattern recognition for machine intelligence, depth estimation for stereo vision, reduction of noise and speckle, restoration, registration, regression, fusion, detection of edge and texture, enhancement, copyright protection, encryption, compression, classification, stabilization, and segmentation.
      • Deterministic or stochastic analysis of these signals in the space-time and various transform domains such as the DFT, DCT, wavelet, curvelet, orthogonal polynomial transformations in their multidimensional representations (e.g., 2D and 3D).
