M. M. Azizul Islam Rasel

Overview

Azizul Rasel is a historian. Apart from historical studies he is interested in critical theory and Marxism. He was educated in Dhaka and Leiden University, with prestigious Encompas Scholarship. He has authored a number of academic articles. He has presented papers in several national and international conferences among which include Center for South Asian Studies, Hawaii University, USA and ‘Mountstuart Elphinstone Local and Global: Colonial Knowledge, National Histories and Regional Realities in Mumbai, 21st workshop of the Association Jeunes Etudȇs Indiennes titled Of Mediation and Power: Intermediaries in the South Asian Societies, New Delhi
He has published a book titled The Seventeenth Century Dutch Travel Literature and the Production of Knowledge on Asia (Berlin, 2013). Recently his research titled ‘Experiencing the Border: The Lushai People and Transnational Space’ is published in Reece Jones and Md. Azmeary Ferdoush (eds.), Borders and Mobility: South Asia and Beyond (Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018). Currently he is researching on Communalism in Pakistan (East Bengal, 1947-1955), The Trade Union and Working Class in East Bengal.

CURRENT RESEARCH:

  • The Relation between workers and trade unions in East Bengal, c. 1947-1960s.
  • Communal Relations in East Pakistan: An Analysis of State and Civil Society.
  • Dutch Representation of the Mughals, Bengal and Assam: A Study of a Seventeenth Century Dutch Travelogue. [Primary draft submitted and feedback received].
  • Women Workers, Rights and Law: Women Workers and the Labour Law in East Pakistan.

Awards and Scholarships:

  • Received ENCOMPAS Scholarship for doing BA and MA in History which covered Tuition Fees and living expense in the Netherlands.
  • Received Academic Roll of Honour, Department of History, University of Dhaka, for outstanding performance in MA.
  • Received AIBS ( American Institute of Bangladesh Studies) awards for research in 2016.

Work Experience:

  • Worked at BRAC University as researcher 2009-2010.
  • Worked at Daily Prothom Alo as researcher 2012-2014.

Creative Works: Published poems and short stories in the national dailies and little magazines.
