The course introduces students to the historical development of world film from its early years to contemporary periods. The course is organized in accordance with the film movements and development – aesthetic, political, technological, social, cultural and economic. These will be applied to a number of topics. Topics include: Early Cinema, Non-narrative film to narrative film, German expressionism, Film as a tool of Political Propaganda, Film as Artistic Expression, Soviet Montage, European Avant-Garde, Classical Hollywood Cinema, French New Wave, Italian Neo-realism, New Hollywood Cinema, and specially South Asian Cinema. Students will study how to look at film with a critical eye more than as a form for entertainment.
