3rd Inter-University Students’ Conference and Cultural Competition

The Department of English at ULAB held its 3rd Inter-University Students’ Conference and Cultural Competition on 21st and 22nd April to commemorate the 200th death anniversary of British novelist Jane Austen. Titled “200 Years of Jane Austen,” the event featured student paper presentation and cultural competition which were performed on 21st and 22nd April successively. Fourteen public and private universities, including BRAC University, Dhaka University, East West University, North South University and ULAB, participated in the academic session. Afia Mursheeda from East West University won the first prize for paper presentation, while S. M. Mahfuzur Rahman of Independent University Bangladesh won the runner up prize. The winner of the cultural program was Dhaka University and the host, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), won the runner-up prize. Professor Fakrul Alam of Dhaka University, Professor Kamaluddin Ahmed of Chittagong University and Professor Mobasshera Khanam of National University judged the academic papers on the first day. Two best papers selected by the judges received monetary prize and certificates. In the cultural competition, five universities competed with each other for the honor. Renowned actress Ms. Suborna Musthafa and Dhaka University’s Theater and Performance Studies Department’s Professor Sudip Chakroborthy judged the cultural competition held on the second day of the event.

Professor Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Professor Emeritus, Dhaka University, attended the Opening Ceremony as the Chief Guest.

Ms. Barbara Wickham, Country Director of the British Council, attended the Closing Ceremony as the Chief Guest.
