Workshop and public lecture on academic publishing and research endeavour abroad
Dr. Raqib Chowdhury, Faculty of Education at Monash University, Australia conducted a workshop titled “Academic Publishing in the Social Sciences: Bibliometrics and the Illusions of Impact” and a public lecture titled “Prospecting Research Studies Abroad: The Practicalities of Choosing Topics, Universities and Supervisors” on December 19, 2019, at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Campus A auditorium. The events were organized by the Department of English and Humanities (DEH) in collaboration with the Center for Language Studies (CLS), ULAB.
In the workshop, Dr. Raqib Chowdhury talked about different aspects of scholarly publications, including choosing a suitable topic, submitting to the right journal, and measuring the impact of journals. The workshop was preceded by the public lecture where he discussed the prospects and challenges of conducting research abroad. The lecture was full of insights on approaching a supervisor, choosing a university and a topic as well as preparing a proposal.
Both the workshop and the lecture were attended by academics from different departments of both private and public universities. The discussion sessions were engaging and interactive with interdisciplinary content. The programs were inaugurated by welcome speeches from Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Honourable Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ULAB and ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Shaila Sultana, Advisor of CLS, Adjunct Faculty of DEH, ULAB, and Professor of the Department of English Language, Institute of Modern Languages, University of Dhaka. Ms. Arifa Ghani Rahman, Associate Professor of DEH, ULAB played the role of MC to ensure well-ordered and rewarding outcome of the events.
