Workshop on Dissecting Data in Qualitative Research

Center for Language Studies (CLS), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) organized a workshop on Qualitative Research, titled “Dissecting Data in Qualitative Research” on January 4, 2020, at Campus-A, ULAB. Professor Dr. Shaila Sultana, Advisor, CLS, facilitated the workshop. Dr. Sultana has been educated at Jahangirnagar University (Dhaka), Monash University (Melbourne), King’s College (London), and University of Technology Sydney (UTS, Sydney). Her research interests include – trans approaches to language and identity, sociology, critical geography, and the historical and sociocultural significance of English in post-colonial countries.

The workshop focused on the epistemological foundations of qualitative approaches to research. It explored the effective ways of conducting qualitative research using different data collection methods. It guided the participants step-by-step through the process of connecting and interpreting data and constructing knowledge while highlighting the issues concerning the validity and dependability in analyzing data sets. Dr. Sultana showed the relevance of qualitative research for developing an understanding of groups who are marginalized in society for their linguistic, educational, demographic, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds.  A question-answer session was held to explore notable observations from the participants.

Academics and professionals from multiple disciplines participated in the workshop.
