Climate Action in Language Education: Impactful ways to integrate environmental issues in English language teaching
The Center for Language Studies (CLS), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organized a webinar titled “Climate Action in Language Education: Impactful ways to integrate environmental issues in English language teaching” on 24 April, 2021 in ZOOM platform. Mr. Colm Downes, Director English, Education and Society at British Council Indonesia, conducted the webinar. He has been involved in education, specifically language education and professional skills training, for over 20 years across Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. The session was initiated with the opening remarks from Dr. Shaila Sultana, advisor, Center for Language Studies. In this session, he focused on British Council’s new Climate Action in Language Education project and presented different case studies of good practice from around the world. The Speaker suggested various practical ways English language teachers can develop and deliver lessons with a sustainability focus, moving beyond traditional course book environment units. Different ways were suggested to actively involve global English language teaching industry to tackle climate change. He stressed on the effectiveness of the green lessons which remain relevant to the learner experience. The facilitator introduced useful websites, online resources and online course modules which will help the teachers to explore the environmental issues for research and teaching purpose. The moderator, Fariha-Tuz-Zahra Chowdhury , lecturer, CLS, welcomed questions from the participants by the end of the session.
