Seminar on Plassey: Myth, Reality & Memory A Brief Study of a Battle that Changed the Course of South Asian History

The General Education Department (GED) of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) organized a Seminar titled " Plassey: Myth, Reality & Memory -A Brief Study of a Battle that Changed the Course of South Asian History " on May 21, 2022.  The Keynote speaker was Sudeep Chakravarti, Associate Professor of South Asian Studies at ULAB and the discussant was Professor Sharif Uddin Ahmed, PhD, Professor, Department of History and Philosophy, North South University. 

The Seminar started with a welcome speech by Professor Shahnaj Husne Jahan, head of the General Education Department, ULAB. In her welcome speech, she discussed about the significance of the battle of Plassey. Prof. Sudeep Chakravarti in his presentation stated how the battle of Plassey was perceived from the perspective of the colonizer and the colonized. He further discussed how is Plassey repeatedly rewritten and replayed to suit today’s needs of history and identity.

The Seminar gives insight into the history and heritage of Bangladesh, hence fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 11. The goal of SDG 4 is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for lifelong learning, while SDG 11 aims to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage.  

The discussion was followed by an MCQ test participated by ULAB students. The seminar was attended by ULAB faculties, students, as well as renowned historians and researchers of the country.
