ULAB Hosts Academic Workshop and Cultural Performance on Manipuri Culture and Music
The Department of General Education (GED) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), in collaboration with MAATRA Gobeshona Songstha, organized an academic workshop and cultural performance titled "Manipuri Culture: Society, Festivals and Performing Arts" as part of the Introduction to Drama course. The event was held on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, under the chairmanship of Professor Shahnaj Husne Jahan, PhD, Head of the Department of General Education. The active participation of students, invited faculty members from different departments, and distinguished guests made the program both engaging and successful.
The academic session was conducted by renowned Manipuri researcher Sukanta Sinha, who delivered an insightful lecture on the history, cultural heritage, social life, festivals, music, dance traditions, and the rich artistic legacy of the Manipuri community. The interactive question-and-answer session encouraged enthusiastic participation and thoughtful discussions among the students. A major highlight of the program was the live Pung (Manipuri drum) performance and classical Manipuri dance presented by Arnab Sharma, a distinguished dancer and Adjunct Faculty member of the Department of Dance, University of Dhaka. His captivating performance provided participants with a practical understanding of the aesthetics, rhythm, spirituality, and expressive traditions of Manipuri performing arts.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and overwhelming interest from students throughout the program. By combining an academic discussion with live cultural performances, the workshop offered students a unique experiential learning opportunity and fostered a deeper appreciation of Bangladesh's cultural diversity and intangible cultural heritage.
Through this collaborative initiative, the Department of General Education, ULAB, and MAATRA Gobeshona Songstha reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting indigenous knowledge, preserving cultural heritage, encouraging intercultural dialogue, and enriching students' learning through academic and cultural engagement.
