Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Program

ULAB is an active participant in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program, which is given for completing a program of activities by anyone between ages 14 to 24. These programs can take 1 to 4 years to complete and the participants must commit to complete their program by age 25.

This international Award reinforces the core values of a liberal arts education, which believes that an education should cultivate the complete human being.

There are three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. With the assistance from adult leaders (respective faculty members in the case of ULAB), participants select and set objectives in the following areas:

1. Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
2. Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
3. Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
4. Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
5. At the Gold level, participants must do an additional Residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.

The Award is given to participants in recognition of their contribution to the society and their own self-development. Many universities and schools are offered DofE program in Bangladesh.

This award is beneficial for students studying at ULAB; it motivates and encourages them to participate in society rather than sitting at home in front of a computer or television. Students will learn leadership and teamwork skills; they will face internal and external challenges and learn how to meet them. The award helps students learn how to communicate, explore and polish their skills.

ULAB is unique in that it has the most developed Expedition and Physical skills programs of any participating university in Bangladesh.
