Prof. Salimullah Khan, PhD

Salimullah Khan, Professor, General Education Department and Director, Center for Advanced Theory holds a PhD in Economics from the New School for Social Research, New York. He also holds LL.M. and LL.B. (Hons.) degrees conferred by the Dhaka University, Dhaka. He taught at Rajshahi University, Rajshahi (1983-84) and Dhaka University, Dhaka (1984-86) before moving on to the United States in 1986. In the US he taught at several colleges including the State University of New at Purchase, NY (1988-89), and the City University of New York, New York, NY (1993-1998).
After his return to Bangladesh in 2000, Salimullah Khan taught at several institutions, including the East West University, Dhaka (2001), the University of Development Alternative, Dhaka (2002) and the Stamford University Bangladesh, Dhaka (2005-2012) before moving on to his present appointment in the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh in 2012 where, since 2016, he is directing the Center for Advanced Theory. In addition, since 2011, he has taught frequently, part-time, in the Theater and Performance Studies Department as well as the Institute of Modern languages, Dhaka University.
Prof. Khan is a well-known critic and public speaker in Bangladesh today and exerts a significant influence on the intellectual climate here. He has also contributed essays on myriad subjects, authored and translated books, and edited journals. He was the chief editor of the Stamford Journal of Law (2005-2012) and ever since 2016 he has been editing two scholarly series at the Center for Advanced Theory, viz., Apostrophe: Working Papers of the Center for Advanced Theory and Occasional Papers in Theory.
At ULAB, he currently teaches two courses on Freudian Psychoanalysis and Modern History of South Asia. Beginning Spring 2020 he is offering a public lecture course (open to all) on the topic of “Ethics from Aristotle to Badiou” which meets alternate Saturdays.

Translating ‘Peau noire, masques blancs’ and other works by Frantz Fanon;

Writing ‘The National Question in South Asia after Bangladesh’ for a conference on ‘Marxism in South Asia’ in mid-November in New Delhi;

Writing a new introduction to ‘The Communist Manifesto’ on the occasion of its 170th anniversary.

Current Projects:

1. ‘The National Question in South Asia after Bangladesh’ for a conference on ‘Marxism in South Asia’ in mid-November at South Asian University, New Delhi;
2. Preparing an edition, bilingually, of ‘Bengali: Spoken and Written’ by Symacharan Ganguli (1838-1929), first published in Calcutta Review in 1877 and translated recently, as well as a rebuttal by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (1938-1894) with Ganguli’s rejoinder. I am also writing a critical introduction to the debate for Occasional Papers in Theory, no. 2;
3. Writing up an address on the 99th anniversary of the October Revolution for a conference at the Jahangirnagar University, Savar, in November 201
