The Department of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering organized a seminar on “Recent Developments in Photovoltaic Solar Cell Technology.” on March 14, 2016. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Saeed Mahmud Ullah, Associate Professor, Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Dhaka.

Dr. Saeed Mahmud Ullah has been working as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Dhaka since 2014. Earlier he has joined the department in 2003. He has been graduated from the Dept. of Applied Physics and Electronics, University of Dhaka and did his Masters from the same department. He did his PhD on photonic integration from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 2008. Last few years he has been working on Nanotechnology and renewable energy.

In the talk Dr. Mahmud Ullah initially described about the basic technical principle of Photovoltaic solar cells. Then he extended his talk to the different kinds of materials used for the PV Solar cell production. He also briefly introduced to the students the differences among various fabrication techniques used in PV industry. Based on the materials and techniques used he had differentiated the solar cells into three major generations and had a brief discussion on their efficiency and market trends. He primarily focused on the third generation PV technologies as he discussed that these are the technologies require comparatively inexpensive development processes and generates decent efficiency. Therefore these emerging technologies, as Dr Mahmud Ullah anticipates, are much suitable for a county like us with limited land and affordable for the potential researchers of the country to work on.

A brief question-answer session was held in conclusion, with the participation of faculties, students and guests with the speaker in a cordial atmosphere.

Professor Dr. Rezaul Karim Mazumder, Head of the Department, ETE, along with students and other faculties of Department were present in the seminar. At the end of the seminar Dr. Mazumder extended his sincere thanks and congratulations to the speaker for his excellent and scholarly presentation on the topic.
