Analytical Skills Challenge at ULAB
On 10th August 2023, the Career Services Office at ULAB hosted a competition amongst the departments titled Analytical Skills Challenge, and took place on the Permanent Campus. The event was facilitated by Dr. Aunul Islam, Education Consultant (Quality Assurance. Training and Development). The competition was participated by four departments (MSJ, CSE, BBA, and DEH),
The event was underway by a speech by Professor Imran Rahman, the Vice-Chancellor of ULAB, who introduced us to Dr. Aunul Islam, who then proceeded to give the students information regarding the competition. He wanted to create a hands-on learning experience of students by competing against each other in a time constraint. The theme for the competition was pollution. He then proceeded to form four groups amongst the students based on their years at ULAB and within a group the members were from the four departments.
After the instructions, the groups settled on their group names. The four groups then went to their pre-destined rooms to create questions since their next step was to go to the streets of Dhanmondi, to ask the locals about their given theme. After creating the questions, the students were dropped off at their destinations, where they spent some time interviewing the locals.
After their interviews were over, they came back to permanent campus for a business launch, where they discussed on creating their analysis report and presentation. After all the groups were ready, it was time for the last hurdle which was the presentation in front of the judges.
There judges chosen were affiliated with four departments of ULAB ; Al Mahmud Rumman, Senior Lecturer, Department of English and Humanities, ULAB, Sohag Barman, Assistant Professor Bachelor of Science, Computer Science and Engineering, ULAB, Md. Aminul Islam, Senior Lecturer, Bachelor of Social Science, Media Studies and Journalism, ULAB, Asif Uddin Ahmed, Assistant Professor and Director, MBA program, School of Business.
Finally, the students began their presentations one by one; the first group was named Omega9 who conducted their survey on environmental pollution, mainly air and sound. They tried to identify the awareness of people and the local’s opinion on preventing the pollution, the next group was Ecosense where they presented on the open defecations impact on water pollution and how it effects the people, the third group; Enviriddles’ conducted their survey on the many pollutions in Bangladesh, last but not least, Northern Lights; their survey was on the pollution awareness amongst the people, and the public’s opinion on changes that could better improve living conditions. Finally, upon reviewing the results, the judges came upon a clear conclusion, that Ecosense is the winner of the competition, although Dr. Aunul later said that the challenge was fierce and anybody could have been the winner.
The event came to a conclusion with Dr. Aunul handing the prizes to the winning team and a short photo session. The competition was also attended by Prof. Jude W.R. Genilo, Pro Vice Chancellor, ULAB.
